7H-Benzo[c]fluoren-7-one is a photolytic aromatic hydrocarbon. It has been shown to have genotoxic activity, which may be due to its ability to cause DNA damage in cells. 7H-Benzo[c]fluoren-7-one is also able to reduce carbonyl groups and has been used for the detection of these groups in biologic samples. The compound can be analyzed by gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 7H-Benzo[c]fluoren-7-one can be found in the faeces of rats and mice.
